1984

  • War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

I think this means that these things are such polar opposites that they depend on each other indefinitely. You can't have one without the other so that makes them the same.

  • who controls the past controls the future. who controls the present controls the past

"He who knows the past knows what will happen again," is a quote I have heard all of my life. I think what this quote expresses is that history repeats itself. In my opinion it isnt history that repeats itself; simply human nature.

  • And when memory failed and written records were falsified—when that happened, the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard against which it could be tested.

when you allow someone or something to begin thinking for you and not giving you the power to make concious decisions then you are giving up your free will and thus they can control your life.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

  • She generally gave herself very good advice though she seldom followed it. p.19

I think we all, from time to time, have regreted neglecting our consciences and resorting to primitive acts and i think this quote highlites that. I believe we are all born with a pretty good head on our shoulders but it is up to us to follow that voice in our head that defines our morals.

  • "Dear, dear how queer everything is today! and yesterday things went on just as usual. i wonder if ive been changed in the night? let me think: was i the same when i woke up this morning? I almost think i can remember feeling a little different. But if i'm not the same then the next question is who in the world am i? p.24

This quote speaks to me on two levels; the first being that I once felt this way after a summer in which i grew six inches. I recall looking in the mirror one day at my longer more slinder body and thinking wow who am I now? The second way it speaks to me is more internal, you see I think we all wonder who we are at times and wish we could find more of life's answers or at least a guiding light to tell us if we're on the right path. Unfortunately it is all just a part of the grand scheme of life. Although one of the aspects that complicates things it is exciting nonetheless.

  • It's really dreadful," she muttered to herself, "the way that all the creatures argue. It's enough to drive one crazy." p.69

I feel that as humans we are often the creatures that she speaks of. It truly is dreadful when we creatures can't stop arguing amongst each other long enough to save lives and our world in general. It is a shame when we put such silly things as religion and land over the price of a life. It indeed can drive one crazy.

  • "If everybody minded their own business", the Duchess said, in a hoarse growl, "the world would go around a deal faster than it does." p.71

This is much like the quote above but I liked the down home southern tone it gives when you separate it from the context of the book. This quote could just as easily have been from a Tyler Perry movie. It is a lesson we are taught from a young age but always disregaurd.

  • "Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise" p. 105

Come on Mrs. Thompspn, this is just bad ass... I've got one that Bob Brooks made up. "What is the difference between an apple? I bicycle, because a vest doesnt have any sleeves.
